Entrepreneurship is the process of starting a business or other organization. The term entrepreneur implies qualities of leadership, initiative, management abilities, and business teambuilding. These are essential attributes through which the entrepreneur develops a business plan, acquires the manpower and other required resources, and is fully responsible for its success or failure; most common option opted by the dental graduates is a private practice and a few explore their career in dental laboratories. Every practicing dentist will aspire in converting a private practice into an enterprise, which is a challenging task. Many of the practitioners have converted their private practices into an enterprise. Success in private practice cannot be pointed out to one reason, but its failure will have multiple reasons. There are various factors which must be considered for successful conversion of a private practice into an enterprise such as understanding the need of the society, mastering the treatment skills, communication skills, updating knowledge and new trends, patient satisfaction, mouth publicity, management of support staff, maintaining professional network, and financial viability.

At present, 25,000-30,000 graduates pass out every year from around 300 dental colleges in India. Jobs for dental graduates and post graduates are gradually diminishing in India. Focus of this article is to encourage young dental surgeons to start their entrepreneurship in manufacturing of instruments/equipment or materials. Entrepreneurs are the leaders willing to take risk and initiative in making use of market opportunities by planning and management of resources. Dental surgeons aspiring to enter into entrepreneurship must modify their personality by improving self-belief, desire to prove, creative thinking, practical approach, persistent efforts, risk taking ability; these are some of the qualities one has to inculcate to be a successful entrepreneur. I would like our young professionals to think and explore the possibilities of starting manufacturing of some of the commonly used materials, most of which are imported.

Entrepreneurship is also associated with innovations and start-ups which are very common in other fields. Technological innovations and improvisation of existing equipment or materials are very important for the advancement of the art and science of clinical dentistry. While some innovations suffer a lack of support, resulting in general non-acceptance, some innovations are gradually adopted and supersede previous techniques and/or materials. Dentists need to be innovators in technology, and so far they have contributed greatly to the development of such innovations in dentistry by finding its clinical dental application. Based on enduring innovations such as high-speed turbine handpiece, high-speed suction, rubber dam, endodontic files and obturation systems, digital dental radiography, dental cone beam computed tomography, digital smile designing, maxillo-facial materials, elastomeric impressions, dental implants, to name a few. One must appreciate the intentions of the innovators have been to improve the quality and experience of dentistry for both patient and clinician; thus improving the "quality of life" of the patients.

Indian government is promoting entrepreneurship in India through its "Make in India" campaign; and operates many schemes for the benefit of existing and prospective entrepreneurs. Schemes for existing entrepreneurs help to upgrade their technology, to develop their market, to acquire international/national quality standards, to adopt energy saving measures, to enter export market, etc. The main objective of the scheme is to promote emerging technological and knowledge-based innovative ventures that seek the nurturing of ideas from professionals beyond the traditional activities of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Such entrepreneurial ideas have to be fostered and developed in a supportive environment before they become attractive for venture capital. Entrepreneurship development institutes (EDI) provide financial assistance under EDI schemes by Ministry of MSME and also provide all type of guidance and have launched many subsidy schemes to help fulfill the entrepreneurship dream of many Indians.

Dental graduates must take benefit of such schemes and pursue their career in a successful entrepreneurship. The purpose of this article is not only to limit our entrepreneurship horizons to private practice but widen it to think big in the manufacturing sector.
